A Successor is the person that will become the new founder of the channel if the current founder(s) lose their NickServ-account (this can be because they are inactive for 45 days or because they remove their account).

You can see who is the successor of the channel by looking up the info of the channel:

     /cs info #CHANNEL

    Example:

     /cs info #omerta

     -ChanServ- Information on #omerta:
     -ChanServ- Founder : Teckna
     -ChanServ- Successor : Bramblerose
     -ChanServ- Registered : Jun 16 05:38:10 2006 (5 years, 10 weeks, 2 days, 06:28:43 ago)
-ChanServ- Flags : HOLD KEEPTOPIC GUARD FANTASY
     -ChanServ- Prefix : ! (default)
-ChanServ- *** End of Info ***

Bramblerose will become founder should Teckna's account be removed.

If you a channel has 2 founders, the successor will only become the new founder if both founders are removed.

Note: If the current founder drops the channel (unregisters the channel), the successor will not be made founder. Instead, the channel and all access will completely be removed.

Who is chosen as the Channel Successor?

The channel successor is the person that, apart from the current founder(s), has the most access on the channel.

    Example:

     Flagslist of a channel:

     -ChanServ- Entry Nickname/Host Flags
     -ChanServ- ----- ---------------------- -----
     -ChanServ- 1 TheCainer +AFHORVafhioqrstv
     -ChanServ- 2 Koeiekop +AHOVhiortv
     -ChanServ- 3 Martin +AHORVafhioqrstv
     -ChanServ- 4 Brando +AHOVhiortv
     -ChanServ- ----- ---------------------- -----
-ChanServ- End of #channel FLAGS listing.

In this channel, TheCainer is the current founder and Martin is the successor because he has more flags than all other people.

It does not matter how much access the successor has, they can even have just VOP (autovoice). As long as they have the most access.

    Example:

     -ChanServ- Entry Nickname/Host Flags
     -ChanServ- ----- ---------------------- -----
     -ChanServ- 1 TheCainer +AFHORVafhioqrstv
     -ChanServ- 2 Koeiekop +i
     -ChanServ- 3 Martin +iv
     -ChanServ- 4 Brando +AViv
     -ChanServ- ----- ---------------------- -----
-ChanServ- End of #channel FLAGS listing.

Brando will be the successor because he has the most access.

If you have multiple people that have the most access and can be successor, then it depends on whether or not someone has the +S-flag:

One of the possible Successors has the +S-flag

If someone has the +S-flag, they will be the channel successor if there is nobody who has more access than that person.

You can give the +S-flag with the following command:

     /cs flags #CHANNEL NICK +S

    Example:

     /cs flags #omerta Martin +S

Note: Only one person can have the +S-flag. If you give it to a 2nd person, the first person will lose the flag.

Note: The +S-flag is not included when giving someone +*-flags (all flags).

    Examples:

     -ChanServ- Entry Nickname/Host Flags
     -ChanServ- ----- ---------------------- -----
     -ChanServ- 1 TheCainer +AFHORVafhioqrstv
     -ChanServ- 2 Koeiekop +AHOVhiortv
     -ChanServ- 3 Martin +AHORVafhiorstv
     -ChanServ- 4 Brando +AHORVafhiorstv
     -ChanServ- ----- ---------------------- -----
-ChanServ- End of #channel FLAGS listing.

Brando will be the Successor because he has the +S-flag and nobody has more access than him.

     -ChanServ- Entry Nickname/Host Flags
     -ChanServ- ----- ---------------------- -----
     -ChanServ- 1 TheCainer +AFHORVafhioqrstv
     -ChanServ- 2 Koeiekop +AHVhirtv
     -ChanServ- 3 Martin +AHORVafhioqrstv
     -ChanServ- 4 Brando +AHOVhiortvS
     -ChanServ- ----- ---------------------- -----
-ChanServ- End of #channel FLAGS listing.

Brando has the +S-flag, but Martin has more access, so Martin is chosen as the channel successor.

None of the possible Successors have the +S-flag

If none of the possible Successors have the +S-flag, then the person that is first in the access list will be the successor.

    Examples:

     -ChanServ- Entry Nickname/Host Flags
     -ChanServ- ----- ---------------------- -----
     -ChanServ- 1 TheCainer +AFHORVafhioqrstv
     -ChanServ- 2 Koeiekop +AHOVhiortv
     -ChanServ- 3 Martin +AHOVhiortv
     -ChanServ- 4 Brando +AHORVafhioqrstv
     -ChanServ- 5 Frank +AHORVafhiorstv
     -ChanServ- 6 Mike +AHORVafhioqrstv
     -ChanServ- ----- ---------------------- -----
-ChanServ- End of #channel FLAGS listing.

Brando and Mike are possible candidates to become successor. However, Brando comes first in the access-list,
so he will be the Channel Successor.

     -ChanServ- Entry Nickname/Host Flags
     -ChanServ- ----- ---------------------- -----
     -ChanServ- 1 TheCainer +AFHORVafhioqrstv
     -ChanServ- 2 Koeiekop +AHOVhiortv
     -ChanServ- 3 Martin +AHOVhiortv
     -ChanServ- 4 Brando +AHORVafhioqrstv
     -ChanServ- 5 Frank +AHOVhiortvS
     -ChanServ- 6 Mike +AHORVafhioqrstv
     -ChanServ- ----- ---------------------- -----
-ChanServ- End of #channel FLAGS listing.

Frank has the +S-flag, but he does not have the most access, so he cannot be the successor.
None of the successor-candidates (Brando and Mike) have the +S-flag, so they will be chosen by
their position in the access-list: Brando comes first so he will be the Successor.

    Changing the channel successor

Step 1: Give the most access

If you want to change the channel successor, the first thing you have to do, is make sure that there is nobody with more access than that person (only the founder(s) may have more access).
An easy way to do this, is by giving that person full access:

     /cs flags #CHANNEL NICK +*

    Example:

     /cs flags #help Teckna +*

Note: Successors do not need to have full access, they can also have less access. As long as they have the most access.

    Step 2: Give the +S-flag

The next step is to give the desired person the +S-flag to solve any issues where other people have the same access:

     /cs flags #CHANNEL NICK +S

    Example:

     /cs flags #help Teckna +S

    Step 3: Check

     /cs info #CHANNEL

    Example:

     /cs info #help

     -ChanServ- Information on #omerta:
     -ChanServ- Founder : Brando
     -ChanServ- Successor : Teckna
     -ChanServ- Registered : Jun 16 05:38:10 2006 (5 years, 10 weeks, 2 days, 06:28:43 ago)
-ChanServ- Flags : HOLD KEEPTOPIC GUARD
     -ChanServ- Prefix : ! (default)
-ChanServ- *** End of Info ***

    Overview

    1. Give the person the most access (e.g. full access):

     /cs flags #CHANNEL NICK +*

    2. Give the person the +S-flag:

     /cs flags #CHANNEL NICK +S

    3. Check if it was successful:

     /cs info #CHANNEL

Note for advanced users: You can also combine the first two commands by using +*+S (no space between +* and +S!): /cs flags #CHANNEL NICK +*+S
